There ya go

Arduino MINI is shit

Well it look cool and stuff but I just can't seem to get it to work.

Manual Doors Installation

With the help of Ben to create a very cool origami ball, I've also put in 5 bright white LEDs into it.
The LEDs will turn on in sequence and will always be on, so people will notice it at all time.

The reason I've chosen to use origami is because its a very interesting craft that will fascinate a lot of people. And for it to be effective I've used tracing paper to make it, making the LEDs more visible.

Something Attractive

I've decided to use origami as an incentive to draw in people to the manual door.

I'm thinking of shoving in some LEDs to light it up from the inside making it more attractive.

Automated Door Installation

For this I'm using 3 ultra bright Red LEDs.
The infrared will detect passerby which will activate the lights, in a flashing/warning sort of pattern.

This should surprise and intimidate them, making them want to stay away.

Infrared Sensor

I've recently purchased and put together an Infrared sensor.
I've decided on using this for the intimidation installation. As someone walk through the sliding door the infrared sensor will detect their presence and will activate the LEDs.

I'm hoping this will surprise them, adding to the negative overall experience getting through the sliding door.

Sliding doors

There are many advantages of the Automated Sliding Door.
Things like the obvious fact that you don't have to open them. Also that there is only one set which means you could just go straight through, because there is nothing in your way.

So if I were to install something that is unavoidable and would evoke some sort of bad reaction or annoyance towards the experience of going through the sliding door, it SHOULD be enough to influence them to use the alternative.

Manual Doors

One of the problem with the manual doors is that there is no incentive for people to use it. Unless you actually really care about the power issue people just head straight to the sliding door.

Also you have to actually go through 2 sets of doors to get to the other side.
This generally put people off from using them.
But this can be use to my advantage for this project as I could use that section in between to create some type of experience for them.

Putting together a Concept

Combining the ideas extracted from the colour theory, interaction theory and the use of lights

So because I want people to use the manual door therefore I have to somehow do it passively so people will go away with a good experience in the back of their mind, so there would be a more likely chance of them doing it again.

And for the sliding doors I have to use a more aggressive method of intimidation (or something) to give them a bad experience, so they're would in the future try to avoid that bad experience again.

To me using these methods are a lot better than showing them some information about how they are destroying the planet or something that cheesy, because we all know these informations but we do it anyway, like smoking.
But by doing it this way users will have the experience stored in there memory bank and will decide in the future whether they would like to repeat that similar experience or not.

Decided on using lights

I've decided to base my installation around the use of LED lights.

I've also got my hands on the Arduino Mini.
Look pretty cool but it seems I have to a breadboard with it to complete the connections.

Also in the tool box is a photo sensor thing. Don't know what to do with all these things yet.

Interaction Theory & Control Theory

In the 371 class we learned about how in design you make something in a certain way to get users to do something.
Also that there are variety of ways of doing this,  which can be a passive suggestions, persuasion to a more direct method of intimidation and manipulation.

Colour Theory Research

In colour theory and colour psychology, studies have shown that through the use of colours the designers can impress, influence, motivate and persuade thoughts and emotions.
This means that it can influence behaviors.

Colour like red suggest aggressiveness, intensity and danger. This means that you could use it to demand something from users, like to stop doing something.

etc...

Analysis

The goal is to make people  use the manual doors and  discourage them to not use the sliding door.

Project Two - Begins

The issue that I am looking into is the Arch/Design School entrance.

Most people going in and out (including me) tend to head straight to the automatic sliding door, even if they have to walk straight pass the 4 manual doors that is always open.
